CORRECTOR > HOME
A punctuation mistake is a violation of the punctuation norm, that is, a set of rules that oblige us to apply or not to apply these or other punctuation marks in a letter. Punctuation marks are necessary in the text so that the person reading it understands the meaning that the author of the text has put in, unambiguously, without distortion. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov compared the punctuation marks with a musical notation, without which it is also impossible to record and then “read” the music.
For a qualitative check of punctuation, Orthograms have to conduct a deep syntactic analysis of each sentence: select parts of speech and parts of a sentence in it, identify existing and possible links between them, and even analyze neighboring sentences. This is a complex task that no one has yet solved for the Russian language to the end. Now Orthogram uses about 900 individual algorithms to test approximately 100 punctuation rules, and the number of algorithms is growing every day.
Any work associated with writing or editing texts requires careful checking for spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors, as well as their correction. Fortunately, in our age of high technologies, it is not necessary to do this manually, which saves time and effort. The special tools, services and programs designed to identify the author’s shortcomings in the text will help to carry out the correction. Even if you do not take into account people who are experiencing great difficulties with the Russian language, spell checking will always be relevant and can be useful in various activities. Errors make all, after all, under the condition of perfect literacy, the human factor is always present.
Log in or register on the english corrector site. This is easy to do through social networks, for example, VKontakte. Paste your text into the editor and click the Check button. After a few seconds, the Orthogram will highlight all errors found in the text and will show on the right a list of notes for each of them.
At the top right, in the area with a list of errors, there is a “Types of notes” panel. In it, you can choose which errors to show, for example, put a check mark on “punctuation”, and turn off the other check marks.
You can navigate through the errors found inside the text by pointing at each mouse pointer, or you can select errors in the list of notes on the right. The active note is highlighted and underlined in the text.
It is convenient to use for navigation “hot keys” of the Orthogram editor. Press F1 to see them.
So, select the error, read its explanation and advice on correcting, if necessary, study the official rule for the link in the Orthogram library, and then edit the text. This can be done with the help of the automatic correction link from the Spelling Board or manually, from the keyboard. After correction, delete the unnecessary note: with a cross in the upper right corner of the note or with Alt-Delete.
CHECK YOURSELF: A LIST OF POSSIBLE ERRORS
Checking your text for errors, do not always imagine what to look for. The following is a checklist of the most common grammatical errors that English texts make. Use this list to check your text for errors.
- Spelling and punctuation: Check whether your text has spelling errors or misplaced punctuation, such as missing points or extra commas;
- Matching the subject and the predicate: Always check whether the predicate (verb) is consistent with the subject in the sentence. Both the subject and the predicate must stand in one person and numbers. For example, in the sentence “Sally likes apples”, the subject (Sally) is consistent with the verb in the third person singular (likes);
- Long sentences: Usually it is recommended not to write too long sentences – it is easy to lose the thread of reasoning in them both to the author and his reader. But if you like to use long complex sentences consisting of several subordinates, we recommend checking them more carefully;
- Tenses: Check how consistently the verb tenses are used in your text. For example, starting to write text in the past tense, have you accidentally jumped to the present?
- Singular and plural: This is a common type of error. Sometimes we accidentally use the plural instead of the singular and vice versa.
In addition to spell checking, Orthograms will help to enhance the beauty of your text: pay attention to semantic redundancy (tautology and pleonasma), point out inappropriate and difficult to read combinations of words, select correct synonyms and epithets, suggest replacing foreign words with correct Russian-speaking analogues, prompt correct accents. Just switch to the Beauty tab and click the Check Beauty button or the F7 key.
TOP QUALITY ON EACH PART
On the Quality tab, the Orthogram will help you improve the text’s SEO parameters: it will tell you how to reduce the amount of “water”, analyze frequency combinations (keywords) and evaluate their redundancy (perepam), pay attention to unnatural phrases (unnatural keywords) and tell how to optimize text for better indexing by search engines, while maintaining its value and appeal to the reader.
STATISTIC OF WORDS, CHARACTERS, ETC
For each scanned document French spell checker creates a statistical report in which, in addition to the number of characters, words, sentences and other statistical data, it provides many other useful information: readability indexes and nebulae, text SEO parameters, the most common words, long words, average time typing, reading it out loud and to yourself and more.
To view the statistical report on the scanned document, click the “Statistics” button in the right corner of the editor menu.
DO NOT FORGET
Orthograms are not a person, but a set of complex mathematical and linguistic algorithms that analyze your text and try to understand its meaning using artificial intelligence methods. At the same time, they are required to qualitatively resolve homonymy: the oven (verb) patties and put the pie in the oven (noun); my (pronoun) brother and my (verb) hands! The situation is aggravated by spelling errors or, for example, the disuse of the letter e. Often, the meaning of the written is not easy to understand, not only to readers, but even to the author of the text!
Therefore, when the Orthogram indicates in the text a place where, in her opinion, there may be punctuation errors, it is based on its understanding of its meaning and explains its point of view in detail. Agree with it or not, as well as correct the errors found – your task.
Every day we work on improving Orthograms: we improve old and add new linguistic algorithms, we train artificial neural networks, we replenish dictionaries – the service will grow wiser before our eyes, but there is still a long way to go. Remember, the Orthogram is not perfect yet: it may misunderstand the meaning of a sentence, give incorrect advice, and even miss any mistake.
On the other hand, the quality of text verification at Orthograms is inferior only to professional correctors and is constantly improving. In addition, she does not get tired and does not get sick, is not subject to “blurring the eyes” and is able to check one hundred and one thousand documents per hour. This means that it will greatly help in reading the text to anyone, even the most competent user, save him from mistakes and typos, save time for more important things.
